History: A Brief HIstory of Heiji Hattori

Personality: Heiji Hattori is fiercely loyal, fiercely protective and too smart for his own good. Son of the famous Osakan police chief Heizo Hattori (called the Demon of Osaka to his face, that's how badass a cop he is), Heiji has been around crime scenes all his life. Blessed with an eidetic memory and a certified genius, Heiji snooped and prodded and pried his way into police work. By the time he was in high school, he'd earned quite a reputation as 'The Great Detective of the West", and has claimed to have solved over 500 cases. An impressive feat for a 17 year old boy.

In many ways he's a very typical teenage boy: drinks a bit, drives his motorcycle, practices kendo, plays baseball. His favorite ball team is the local Osaka team, and he has a huge amount of local pride. He's straightforward, more straightforward than any of his friends. He's a terrible liar and too honest for his own good. Hattori's not a terribly complicated person: he strives to do right, and usually succeeds. He's got a volatile temper, but rarely erupts in violence against anyone else (unless it's provoked/warranted). He yells, mostly, especially if his pride is wounded. And oh, Hattori has so much pride. He knows he's good at what he does, and he's not afraid of owning up to the fact. He's also terribly proud of his hometown, often proclaiming it the best. His Osaka accent (Kansai-ben) is quite pronounced, and he gets annoyed when people make fun of it, or Osaka. Strangely, he has little accent when speaking another language.

Despite his temper, Hattori's enthusiastic and energetic, and despite his usual haunts around dead bodies, he keeps up a good cheer about everything. Not to say that he can't be serious, and when murders get complicated, so does his mood. When his temper does explode, his crankiness usually passes quickly. For Hattori, yelling his impatience and irritation is almost a way of expressing affection, in that he tends to yell at the people he cares about more than he yells at anyone else. Kazuha, his childhood best friend, and Conan, his current best friend, are most often the victims of his bouts of yelling. He's overly protective of his friends, even though he trusts them to take care of themselves.

Hattori does know when it's time to get down to business and be serious, and usually it's when something isn't coming together as neatly as it should.

Despite being a brilliant detective and a solid believer in evidence and science, Hattori is a tad superstitious. When he was a child, he handcuffed himself to his best friend (and future love interest) Kazuha, and had no key. They involuntarily had to spend quite some time together, and became inseparable because of it. Once freed, Kazuha made two omamori, good luck charms: one for herself, one for him. Inside the omamori are each a link from that pair of handcuffs that brought them together. Though Hattori has openly mocked Kazuha, the bags, and the superstitiousness of it all, it doesn't change the fact that he never takes it off. The omamori has been shown to protect him: when he wasn't wearing it, Hattori was shot in the stomach. He also has a lucky White Sox (changed to "Sax" because hello MLB copyright!) baseball cap he wears everywhere. If he's not wearing his lucky baseball cap, it's in his back pocket. He wears it backwards until he needs to 'turn on' his brain (get serious about the case), then he flips it forwards.

On injuries: Hattori has a tendency to get hurt a great deal. Part of it has to do with his unthinking way of flinging himself headfirst into whatever he's confronted with, often without any planning. He's been shot, stabbed, cut, punched, poisoned, and crashed his motorcycle. He doesn't whine when injured, though and tends to downplay whenever he's in pain. He also doesn't brag about the injuries he's received in line of duty, and tends not to talk about them much.

Hattori's best friend is Kudo Shinichi, aka Edogawa Conan. Heiji barged into Conan's life to try and determine who was the best detective, and during their second meeting, discovered that Conan was Shinichi in disguise. Since then, Heiji's helped keep Conan's true identity secret (badly: he continues to refer to Conan by his true name), and has helped Conan investigate the Black Organization, the group that poisoned Shinichi in the first place. Heiji has investigated suspected members on his own, and reports his findings with Conan.

Heiji and Conan often team up to solve cases, and have become very close. They work together with an ease that's surprising, given their competitive natures and risky behaviors. If pressed, Hattori would say that Shinichi is among his best friends. When on cases, their thoughts are shown to mirror each other, a rarity given that each boy is a genius. They communicate at a glance and understand each other perfectly in times like these. Forget finishing each others' sentences! Hattori trusts Conan with his life, often falling in line to listen to and carry out Conan's plans. Hattori also helps keep Conan from worrying too much. With his easygoing personality and relaxed attitude, he is a buffer for Shinichi's paranoia.

Hattori's stubbornness is fairly legendary, and when he doesn't want to do something, no power can make him. His father, Superintendent Supervisor of the Osaka Prefectural Police, has made no secret of the fact that he disapproves of Heiji's choice to be a detective. Heiji doesn't particularly care, addresses his father very informally, and does what he wants anyway. Heiji's mother supports his endeavors as a detective, despite her husband's silent disapproval, though she does move behind her son's back at times to make sure he stays safe.

Hattori's loyal as a dog, and just as tenacious, and won't quit until he figures out the mystery.

Items on your character at canon point:
Hattori's on his motorcycle coming home from school and kendo practice, so he has:
Baseball hat
Omamori around his neck
Wallet
house keys
Cell phone
Bookbag: four textbooks (calculus, physics, history, japanese literature), three notebooks, calculator, miscellaneous pens and pencils, leftover bento from lunch
Kendo bag: Shinai, Bokken, practice gi and hakama, practice armor (face, arms, chest, waist.)
Green motorcycle (most likely a Suzuki DR-Z for those that care about such detail)
[Note: I don't expect Hattori to get to keep either his bike or his kendo gear, but missing it will give him even more to fuss about when he lands. His motorcycle is his baby, and that gear is expensive!]

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Abilities
Hattori has some cool abilities! He:
• Drives a motorcycle
• Has (nearly) perfect pitch and the ability to pick up languages quickly
• Is an impressive detective
• Can kendo fight with uncanny brute strength (for a normal human)
• Has an eidetic memory
• Can pick locks, but has moral quandaries about those kinds of illegally obtained evidence.
• Can shoot a gun with decent accuracy

Strengths
His genius intelligence - Hattori is a sponge, and will absorb every bit of information that's passed his way. He's a genius, and though proud of his intellect, never arrogant about it. Nor does he (truly) hold it against others that they're not as smart as he is. His incredibly high-functioning brain lets him stay several steps ahead of most people, and most criminals; he's able to keep calm during tense situations and get himself in, and back out of, trouble.

Deductive Abilities & Observational skills - Hattori has been solving cases since he was seven. He has a natural knack for looking around a room and seeing what is out of place, no matter how miniscule. He also can piece together evidence on the fly to solve any mystery.

Straight-forward determination - He doesn't give up, not ever, and no matter what the odds. Hattori once rode his motorcycle across a rope budge that was falling just so the criminal he was chasing wouldn't get away.

Incredibly High Pain Tolerance - This is likely stemming from his driven nature, but Hattori won't let a little thing like pain stop him from doing what he feels he must. An example of this is during the case of the Mermaid's Tear [add reference here]. Hattori and his best friend Kazuha had stumbled off a cliff. Hattori held onto a branch with one hand, Kazuha the other. In an attempt to get Heiji to save himself, Kazuha stabbed him with an arrow she had on hand. Hattori steadfastly refused to let go, and wound up pulling them both to safety.

Athletic - Yeah, he can do that 'stand on the edge of a sword pointed at him' trick. As the captain of the school kendo team, and one with the nickname of 'demon', Hattori's physical endurance is very high. He has excellent balance and is strong and capable of holding his own in a fight, using both brute strength and strategy to defeat his opponent. He is unafraid of pushing past his limits, and his sense of balance and upper-arm strength have saved him numerous times in the past. His sense of balance has not prevented him from being pushed off of cliffs and boats, however.

Weaknesses
Hot-headedness - Heiji's temper is quick to flare, and once it's provoked, he burns bright and hot. To his credit, he rarely stays angry long, but his temper gets him into trouble, mostly with other people. When provoked, he tends to make rash decisions, which are often not good. He yells a lot, it's his usual response to things that annoy him. On the top of the list of things that annoy him are stupidity, crime, and people who insult Osaka.

Inability to lie/act- Hattori is an absolutely terrible liar, and an even worse actor. He just sucks at it. His natural enthusiasm combined with his inability to hide things makes him a rather poor choice for undercover work, or as a secret-keeper. Even when it is imperative to keep things a secret, he cannot seem to keep his mouth closed.

Recklessness/Impulsiveness - He's 17 and thinks he's indestructible. This is possibly fueled by the fact that he has been severely injured a number of times (including getting shot) and walked away perfectly fine. When there's a case on the line, Hattori simply will not stop until the criminal is caught. This reckless attitude has earned him injuries and being held hostage on more than one instance.

Competitive nature- Heiji never backs down from a challenge, even to his own personal detriment. His prideful nature can and has gotten him into a great deal of trouble in the past. Perhaps it stems from the fact that he seems to have not gotten much overt recognition from his police chief father, but Heiji, despite his confidence, feels that he has a lot to prove. This, combined with his temper, make him very easy to provoke.

Samples
Network/Action Spam Sample: A fair bit of threading over over here. He yells a lot…

Prose Log Sample:

Heiji wasn't exactly enthused to have woken up in a strange city in America of all places, but he had adapted fairly quickly. As quickly as one could adapt to finding themselves suddenly on the other side of the world, at any rate. The place definitely unnerved him, though, in a way that corpses and grisly murder scenes didn't. Although he'd never admit it to anyone ever, Heiji'd been thumbing the omamori tucked under his shirt repeatedly. It might be superstitious bunk, but it was comforting superstitious bunk. Kazuha'd always insisted that it had protective powers, and in this place? Heiji figured he'd need all the protection he could get.

He supposed it was the dank, the dark, and the disrepair that kept him so unsettled. It was an unholy trifecta of creepy and it settled into his very bones. The barrier didn't help, made him feel itchy and want to pace. He was a caged animal here; he knew it and the people that kidnapped him knew it, too.

At least there was usually something to keep him busy. There was plenty to explore. From the few places that had electricity to the towers to the origin of that noise… Heiji wasn't lacking for stimulation. As far as he could figure, there was no way out of the here. The barrier stopped everything, and he'd singed his eyebrows off when he tried to press his luck. Nothing he threw at it broke it, and it seemed to stop animals from doing the same. Not that animals tried. There might be some sort of sense there, Heiji thought, but the Osakan boy wasn't known for his common sense.

The people who had found themselves arriving in the same manner he himself had weren't much help. None of them could remember getting here, they'd just woken up with whatever they'd had on them just as he had. And not that Heiji was one to judge (okay, he totally was), but most of them were just bizarre. Some of them dressed and acted like anime characters almost, or actors on a cheesy sci-fi. Most, Heiji deemed, were useless as far as information was concerned.

How did he get here? Why was he here? Where was here?

The questions burned in Heiji's brain, and try as he might, he couldn't seem to find the answers. He wasn't used to not being able to figure something out. He'd never failed in the past, and he was damn sure that this creepy dilapidated town wasn't going to be the thing that beat him yet.

He didn't have the answers, but come hell or high water, he was going to.

♦ Thread: A fair bit of threading over on the voice testing
♦ Post: ((While I much prefer the post I started in the threading above, I can do a different one here))

[ Hattori doesn't know where he is, and he's pissed about it. He doesn't forget things, especially not things as basic as 'where he was a few moments ago'. Clearly, something is Going On, and he's not happy about it. ]

If this is a joke, this ain't funny.

[ He reads the rhyme on the fountain, and quickly pieces what's expected of him. This is just a waste of his time.]

Oi! Kidnappers! If ya wanted me ta solve your little puzzle, at least ya kidnapped th' best person for th' job. Good for you, an' ya better pray to the gods that we never meet. They ain't gonna answer your prayers, though. I'm comin' for ya, whoever ya are.

[ The video feed turns on, obviously bumped accidentally. All that can be seen is part of a jacket and an arm. The voice emanating from above sounds awfully annoyed, though.]

"--do this on purpose!"

[A higher-pitched voice, sounding no less irritated, comes clear through.]
"You idiot! I told you not to eat anything! But did you listen? No, of course not."

"YOU try wanderin' around in strange woods for a week an' not eating much then turn down that kinda food!"

"Gladly. The brain works better on an empty stomach."

"That's why you ain't tall, yanno. Nutrient-starved brains don't work well, either!"

"I eat just enough to stabilize."

"An' stay short."

"That's not what made-.... is that recording?"

"Eh? What're you talkin' abo---oh."

[ The video swings downward, showing that Hattori Heiji's hand is squarely attached to Edogawa Conan's head. ]

"....idiot"

"I ONLY GOT ONE HAND I CAN USE RIGHT NOW, AHOU, IT WASN'T ME!"

"Well it wasn't me either. Just turn it off-no wait. I'll do it."
